Perfecting Defensive Positioning with Shadow Drills

Defensive skills are not just about tackling; they’re about positioning and anticipation. Shadow defending drills can teach players how to read an attacker’s movements and stay in control. Pair up players and assign one as the attacker and the other as the defender. The attacker dribbles the ball in a confined area while the defender mirrors their movements, staying low and balanced.

The key for defenders is to maintain proper distance—close enough to challenge for the ball but not so close that they’re easily bypassed. Encourage defenders to focus on their body positioning, keeping their hips square to the attacker and steering them toward less dangerous areas.

To make the drill more dynamic, allow the attacker to attempt a shot or cross if they beat the defender. Add a coach or teammate to serve as a secondary defender, forcing the attacker to make quick decisions. These drills build confidence and discipline, teaching defenders to stay composed even in high-pressure situations.
